You might have seen images of this spectacular reef – on billboards, on TV, and of course, all over the internet – everywhere. If, like me you thought it was a great way to advertise the reef, but perhaps had been photoshopped just a little, you’ll be so happy to know that it’s real and it’s spectacular.

Discovered by a pilot cruising over it in 1975, Heart Reef, in the middle Great Barrier Reef, is a stunning natural composition of coral that has formed into the shape of a heart. Located in Hardy Reef, Heart Reef is best experienced from the air by helicopter or seaplane, as you’re unable to snorkel or dive there due it’s protected status – and rightly so!

On our tour with Hamilton Island Air, our very accommodating pilot flew us around the reef 3-4 times making sure everyone got their postcard perfect picture and didn’t move on until everyone was happy – now THAT’S a lot of LOVE!
